AAFIS (Advanced Automatic Flight Inspection System) is the next generation of Flight Inspection Systems. It incorporates the latest technology in ditigal signal processing and provides a modern windows interface. The system is enclosed within a compact, forward-facing console that typically replaces only one seat of a small aircraft.

The AAFIS meets the requirements of ICAO and the FAA, and automatically applies the tolerances of both organizations to the Inspection Results. Aircraft position is determined by Differential GPS for all ILS and other approach type calibrations, and by GPS for all other inspections.

Dual VOR/ILS and DME receivers allow multiple inspections to be performed simultaneously, thereby saving flying time, as well as providing redundancy and the security of having two receivers providing identical measurements.

An RVA Antenna Switching Unit automatically connects a Signal Generator to selected receivers for automatic calibration. In addition, the ASU permits a Spectrum Analyzer to be connected to the various antennas during an inspection.

The two large LCD screens display data, signal graphs, a moving map and instrumentation in separate windows under the control of the operator. Each window can be deselected, resized and even moved from one screen to another to achieve the optimum display configuration preferred by the individual inspector.

Ground Equipment

A Differential GPS system consisting of a GPS receiver, UHF transmitter and a Controller sends GPS correction signals to the GPS receiver in the aircraft to yield position accuracies of the order of several centimetres.

A Ground Support System can store Facility data and all Results data transferred from the aircraft. Inspection results and graphs can be recalled for display and printing.

A Ground Training System accepts all the inspection real-time data stored on the aircraft and can replay complete inspections for training purposes.

AAFIS Equipment

AAFIS uses the best available navaid receivers, some of which are specially modified for Flight Inspection.

  • Honeywell RNA-34BF VOR/ILS receivers(2)
  • Collins DME-442 (2)
  • Collins ADF-462
  • Collins 51Z-4 Marker
  • Collins TDR-90 Transponder
  • Collins VHF-422 Communications transceiver
  • Ashtech (Thales) Z Sensor GPS
  • Two 17" LCD displays
  • Spectrum Analyzer
  • RVA Antenna Switching Unit
  • Printer
  • A Direction Finding System supplies bearing information to selectable ground transmitters to detect sources interfering with navaid reception
All the Flight Inspection System units are contained in a certified console that occupies one seat of a standard small aircraft.
